Fissure Sealants
The first adult molars appear in children from about six years of age. They are used to chew food into small pieces. The chewing surfaces of the molars are roughened by pits and groves, also known as fissures, and are the most important teeth to seal.
Fissure Sealing is easy and painless.
It is done in four easy steps
- The Dentist or Hygienist will start by putting a green gel onto the surfaces, which will help keep the sealant in place.
- The Green Gel is then washed off.
- A fluid sealant will then be allowed to flow into the pits and fissures of the chewing surfaces.
- The sealant will then be set hard using a blue light.
Fissure Sealants once set are rather like a plastic coating. Some are colourless others are white. A Fissure Sealant is expected to last as long as a Silver filling. Fissure Sealants are a very important aid in the prevention of decay, but it is still very important to clean the teeth, every day, with a good quality toothbrush and Fluoride toothpaste.
